Rugs are one of those things that will not be one of the most expensive purchases of your room, but they’re not the cheapest either. It not like you can run down to Target and find a gorgeous 8 x 10 shag for an easy 50 bucks. These days you can find a nice quality area rug for about $300. Thats a lot of money to spend on one object for your room. But i guarantee you, with the right selection, it will make the WORLD of difference.
LETS TALK SIZE
What is the right size for your space? In most cases bigger is better. Why is this? Think of your rug as a frame for your space. If you think about it, a rug is the only piece in the room that will share itself with most of the other pieces in your room.
In the picture above, the rug is touching a couch, two accent chairs, the coffee table AND a side table. It brings all of the separate pieces together to make one cohesive look for the room.
LETS TALK COLOR
A rug can set the entire tone of a room. Choosing the right rug comes down to your own personal style. Do you like more neutral tones? Maybe you love a nice pop of color? Really, the only advice I can give you is go with something that YOU love. If you choose a rug that YOU love and it make you happy then you can’t go wrong. Pillows, picture frames, vases, etc. come in later.
LETS TALK TEXTURE
This is by far, my favorite category! I love a good textured rug! Shag, cowhide, jute, you name it! Texture is probably on of the most forgotten elements when people are choosing decor items for their spaces. But yet, its one of the most important! Mix it up, if you have a sleek coffee table, go with a shag or furry rug. I WILL BE SO HAPPY IF THIS IS THE ONLY THING YOU AWAY FROM THIS POST – LAYER LAYER LAYER!! This is an easy way to add an insane amount of interest to your space without doing much at all. Plus it will really impress your guests!
Well that’s all for now guys! It was amazing sharing all of my rug secrets with you! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and get to use some of them in your own homes!
Yes, we are buying a new house. We currently live in my parents old house. We bought it off of them just after Corey proposed. We did a couple things to spruce it up a bit, nothing major. But the house never really felt like our home. I mean, I lived there happily with my Dad, Mom and brother for 10 years, but Corey and I were starting this new chapter of our lives and it still felt like their place, not ours. So one year later…
Ta Daaa! Our new old home! Let me tell you, house shopping sounds great and is fun… for the first 5 minutes! Don’t get me wrong, day dreaming and looking at properties in my area is always on my fallback list of things to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon. But actually looking to purchase a home can be stressful. Especially when you get into a bidding war with the current owners and they have multiple offers! But luckily I have my Mortgage Banking Officer Fiancé to deal with all of that!
Now lets see what we are working with here…
A reminder of the before:
I know this isn’t the best quality of photo, but stay with me! I’ll be sure to add some higher quality photos soon. Ok so whats new? Just about everything…
The couches were the biggest purchase. We opted to go with the feather and down, extra deep cushion couch and it was totally worth it! This particular couch can be found at Jerome’s in San Marcos, CA.
The coffee table is Corey’s favorite, he says it looks like a draw bridge and therefore that makes it manly. This one was an awesome find! We were just browsing one day at our local Pottery Barn, and we always make our way over to the clearance or discount section. This baby was sitting there and was half off because it was missing on little bolt! Needless to say, we bought it! I think they have discontinued it since then.
The bookshelf is IKEA! this is one of my favorite things that i have ever bought at IKEA. I like the open shelving as well as the black metal and glass shelves, it make for a beautiful display case! VITTSJÖ Shelving unit – $70.00, STABBIG Lantern – $19.99
